Mississauga, ON – February 4, 2015 – Candu Energy offers its congratulations to Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP) on obtaining a seven-year licence extension for the Wolsong1 CANDU® reactor.
Wolsong 1 underwent a successful life extension in 2009-2011 and was connected to the Korean electrical grid in July 2011. Wolsong 1’s operating license expired around the end of 2012 and the unit was temporarily shut down while the Korean regulator, the Nuclear Safety and Security Commission (NSSC) reviewed the licence application.
On Feb. 26, the NSSC voted in favour of the licence extension. KHNP expects to return Wolsong 1 to operation in April, when it will continue to provide Korean businesses and citizens with safe, reliable, affordable and CO2-free energy.
