Mississauga, ON – June 25, 2014 – Candu Energy Inc. presented a cheque for $18,000 to the Canadian Cancer Society.
“I am pleased to present this cheque to the Canadian Cancer Society,” said Candu Chief Nuclear Officer, President & CEO Preston Swafford. “Not only does the nuclear industry in Ontario provide more than 50% of our power, but it also plays a key role in providing cancer detection and diagnosis options.”
In 2011, Candu Energy employees voted the Canadian Cancer Society to be their charity of choice. Since then, an employee team has led many fundraising events, the most recent being a Relay For Life team. Through individual donations and company-sponsored activities, the Relay For Life team has raised over $9,000, which the company has matched dollar for dollar. This surpasses last year’s fundraising efforts of $7,000, which the company also matched. “Candu Energy employees recognize the importance of supporting an impactful and worthwhile organization like the Canadian Cancer Society,” said Swafford. The Society’s mission is the eradication of cancer and the enhancement of the quality of life of people living with cancer.
“The Canadian Cancer Society recognizes the incredible support of Candu Energy and its dedicated staff,” said Pam Kiez, Development Associate, Canadian Cancer Society. “Candu Energy has actively participated in Relay For Life, the Society’s signature event for the past nine years and has consistently brought enthusiasm and excitement to this community event. Generous donations, like those of Candu Energy enable the Canadian Cancer Society to fund life-saving research and provide those living with cancer the information and support services that they need.”
Candu Energy employees on the Relay For Life team joined 43 other teams on June 20 at Mississauga Secondary School. They walked for 12 hours to show their support for the fight against cancer. This is the ninth year that “Team Candu” has participated in the Relay For Life. The team has raised close to $80,000 in that time.
The Canadian Cancer Society is the largest national funder of cancer research in the county, providing more impact, on more cancers, in more communities than any other cancer organization.
