Candu Energy Applauds Federal Government Announcement to Extend NRU Reactor Operations

Mississauga, ON – February 23, 2015 – Candu Energy Inc., a Member of the SNC-Lavalin Group, applauds the Canadian Federal Government’s announcement to extend the life of the National Research Universal (NRU) reactor in Chalk River, Ontario, until March 31, 2018.

NRU continues to produce a large percentage of the world's medical isotopes, used in both the diagnosis and treatment of life-threatening diseases, and Canada is currently a leader in isotope production around the world. NRU is operated by Canadian Nuclear Laboratories Ltd. (CNL), a subsidiary of Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd. NRU and other CNL facilities are important to the CANDU nuclear industry for their unique abilities, including irradiation testing and experimental fuel fabrication.

“We are pleased by the Federal Government’s decision to extend operations at NRU,” said Preston Swafford, President & CEO, Candu Energy Inc. “Not only does it secure the supply of medical isotopes for Canadians and many others around the world, but it also allows NRU to continue to play its important role in the Canadian nuclear industry.”

“The extension gives the industry two more years to develop further opportunities to commercialize the science and exceptional technology developed at CNL,” added Swafford. “And it will also allow bidders in the current GoCo process to contribute to discussions to maximize the value of NRU’s capabilities going forward.”
